Gardening and Spicing It Up

Jasper County ANR Agent, Derrick Jones will be hosting a multi-session program with Spalding County FACS Agent, Tracey Saxton at the Jasper County Senior Center throughout the 2024 calendar year. This program is titled Gardening and Spicing It Up which features programs from transplanting to Zumba and terrarium creation. Jasper County ANR Agent Derrick Jones is hosting a Make & Take series with guest speaker Carsen Dean, Oconee County ANR Agent. All four sessions will take place at the Jasper County High School Ag Classroom and Shop (14477 Hwy 11 in Monticello) from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. Pre-registration and the $30 fee are required prior to all sessions. First up is the Make & Take Bee Hotel on March 26 (registration deadline March 15). Participants who register for all four sessions as a bundle will receive a discounted fee of $100.

May 3 2024 Georgia Master Naturalist Program Bogart, GA - (45.0 miles) The Georgia Master Naturalist Program is an adult environmental education course developed by UGA Extension and the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources for people interested in exploring the habitats, ecosystems and the natural environments of our state. The Program is a combination of lectures and hands-on field studies taught by UGA faculty and field experts. Each year's program is unique and field trips and topics are subject to change. Previous Athens Area Master Naturalist programs included trips to Thompson Mill Arboretum in Braselton, GA and Rock and Shoals Granite Outcrop. Georgia Master Naturalist Program graduates are invited to the annual ANREP conference. We are currently accepting applications for the 2024 Master Naturalist course! The course will begin in April of 2024 and will be held on Fridays for nine consecutive weeks.

May 8 Lunch & Learn - Snakes of Georgia Conyers, GA - (35.0 miles) Snakes... chances are we have all seen them in our yards at some point. Come learn about these critters, which ones are found in Georgia, and what may be considered a good snake instead of a bad snake. For a provided lunch, a $10 registration is required by May 1, 2024. Please contact us to register! If you are bringing your own lunch, attendance is free.

May 14 Backyard Poultry Workshop Griffin, GA - (33.0 miles) Set yourself up for backyard poultry success with this hands-on program featuring unique, practical lessons including egg candling basics, insect rearing for chickens, poultry biosecurity, and more. This class does not provide an egg candling license but will teach you the basics for home use.
May 14 Henry County Extension Lunch and Learn - Backyard Chickens McDonough, GA - (24.0 miles) Raising backyard chickens has become more popular in recent years. The program will cover the basics of raising chickens with topics such as how to choose healthy chickens, food and shelter, ways to minimize ailments, and other pertinent information. The instructor will be Dr. Casey Ritz, UGA Extension Poultry Scientist. No cost and no registration required.
May 15 The Right Bite Diabetes Cooking School Forsyth, GA - (22.0 miles) The Right Bite Diabetes Cooking School emphasizing the importance of healthy food preparation in the control of diabetes will be offered by the Monroe County Office of the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension. Right Bite will begin May 15 (10:30 AM to 12:30 PM) at the Monroe County Extension Office. Classes will meet 8 times throughout 2024 (1/24, 2/21, 4/17, 5/15, 7/17, 8/21, 10/23, and 11/20). Registration will be on a class-to-class basis. We recommend you attend a minimum of 3 classes throughout the year. Classes will be led by Amanda Harner. Each session will feature a brief presentation on some aspect of nutrition management of diabetes along with the demonstration and sampling of lower calorie, controlled carbohydrate recipes. Each class will cost $12 per participant. May 18 MGEV Info Series: Composting & Soil Types (location 2) Conyers, GA - (29.0 miles) Come out and join our Rockdale County Master Gardener Extension Volunteers at both Cowan Ace Hardware locations in Conyers, GA, and ask them any questions you have on composting and soil types! They will offer their expertise, advice, and UGA publications, all for free!
